Buy or make? Agricultural production diversity, markets and dietary diversity in Afghanistan

Wednesday, 15 October 2025 by admin

Increasing on-farm production diversity and improving markets are recognized as ways to improve the dietary diversity of smallholders. Using instrumental variable methods to account for endogeneity, we study the interplay of production diversity, markets and diets in the context of seasonality in Afghanistan. We confirm an important seasonal dimension to the interplay. Improved crop diversity over the year is positively associated with dietary diversity in the regular season, but not in the lean season. Livestock species diversity remains important for dietary diversity throughout the year, but particularly so in the lean season when the influence of cropping diversity is low. Market aspects become important for dietary diversity specifically in the lean season.

Evaluating Social and Behavior Change Components of Nutrition Activities: A Design Guide for USAID Staff

Thursday, 18 September 2025 by admin

This Guide is organized into ten modules, each covering a specific topic or step important for organizing and facilitating CA. They are designed to provide practical guidance and tips on how to apply CA principles in a relatively concise, easy-to-reference format that can be utilized as needed. In this way, users need not necessarily read the entire guide in sequence, but rather refer to those modules applicable in the moment. You may find that completing a step in one module may lead you to retrace your work in an earlier module, as many of the components are interrelated and, in general, development is an iterative process. Throughout the document we have hyperlinked all references to other modules to facilitate navigation and quick reference.

Sustainable and resilient Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems for improved nutrition

Wednesday, 17 September 2025 by admin

Disruptions in Indigenous Peoples’ food systems (IPFS) have caused profound changes in their dietary patterns. Loss of food biodiversity and increased consumption of processed foods lead to malnutrition, with indigenous women disproportionately affected.

This toolbox provides guidelines on how to design and assess food biodiversity and dietary diversity projects with local communities, with the aim of improving the diets and nutrition of Indigenous Peoples. It focuses on local food biodiversity, leveraging Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge, practices, languages, culture, and environment.

Mapping of territorial markets

Wednesday, 17 September 2025 by admin

Malnutrition in all its forms (undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, overweight and obesity) is a major global challenge, and improving nutrition is a key priority for global development, as recognized in the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this context, ensuring availability, physical accessibility and affordability of healthy and nutritious food at territorial level is crucial to ensure the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In many developing countries, territorial markets are key retail outlets for fruits and vegetables, but also for animal source foods and staple foods. Besides the relevance, data concerning the availability of the different food groups and characteristics of food retailers and consumers in territorial markets are seldom considered in national data collection systems. This publication presents a structured methodology and a series of guidelines for mapping territorial markets, as developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), along with representatives of producer organizations and academics.

Making extension and advisory services nutrition-sensitive 2021

Thursday, 11 September 2025 by admin

Human nutrition is vital for agriculture. Many smallholder farmers are food-insecure and suffer chronic or acute forms of malnutrition. This can permanently harm the physical and cognitive growth of children, while reducing productivity as household members are less able to carry out agricultural work.

Agriculture is vital for human nutrition. Nutrition has long been considered mostly a health issue. However, agriculture plays an essential role in ensuring nutritional wellbeing not only for rural populations, but also for society as a whole.Beyond producing food in sufficient quantity, agri-food systems should also:

  • provide diversified, safe and nutritious foods;
  • improve rural incomes and resilience, and thus enhance access to healthy diets;
  • make foods that contribute to healthy diets available and accessible at national and sub-national levels.

To this end, we must build the capacities of farmers, agriculture extensionists, consumers and others, encourage innovation, investments and enabling policies, and address gender issues. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) uses a food-based approach to agricultural development to make the global food system produce better nutritional outcomes.

Global capacity needs assessment (GCNA) methodology

Monday, 01 September 2025 by admin

This methodology aims to support countries to:
explore opportunities and challenges to integrate nutrition-related objectives into agricultural programmes and policies; identify capacity needs of the EAS providers and at the organizational and policy/enabling environment levels for strengthening capacities to integrate nutrition outcomes in their regular tasks and responsibilities; and identify knowledge gaps in training materials on nutrition-sensitive agriculture.
